CDAC "READY FOR SCHOOL"08 - Rice Raising (21Dec08)

CDAC "READY FOR SCHOOL" 2008 is an event to help the less privilege students under CDAC's assistance programmes to cope with the additional expenses in the new acdemic year. I have never planned to moblise anyone from Yuying SHG for the event, knowing that VSS has never had any problem in getting people involved so far. Neither it has come to my mind to share this event in our SHG blog initally.

However, I was suprised to see 2 of our new volunteers from Yuying SHG (Weihao and Eugene.C) taking their own initiative to take part in the event at CDAC HQ when VSS emailed them for assistance. It was so concident that both of them were involved in the Rice Donation counter. The volunteers at the counter were to carry and pile up rice donated by the public. To my understanding, it was targeted to raise 10,000kg of rice for 400 low-income familes selected from CDAC Workfare Programme.

While I was volunteering in the event, I witnessed our volunteers strong volunteerism spirit. Putting in their strength and sweat to carry packets of heavy rice brought in by donors. I also saw the overwhelming response from the heart-warming public communities coming forward to donate the rice. Interesting scene! I was thinking that it would be good to share with all of you :

**According to my understanding, the rice will be distributed to 400 low-income familes in mid January 2009 before Chinese New Year.

The entire CDAC "READY FOR SCHOOL" event is more than just rice donation. It mainly constitute programmes like, games stalls, stage performance, free haircut, kids workshops, cancer screening, food & drinks, parents talk...etc. To my understanding, the event involves 400 volunteers in 3 event locations. It ended with 3500 families leaving the event with School Packs & Family Packs. Getting ready their children back to school :-)
