Thoughts on the Training Session

The topic for the 1st half of the training session was “Mentoring Teens in the Internet Age”. I thought the talk was well-delivered and was at an acceptable pace. The talk’s purpose was probably to serve as a good introduction (or a rude shock?) to parents who had not been previously exposed to the world of online activities. But to most people who are already familiar with the majority of the talk’s content, it may have seemed a little boring.

In the end, the talk did its job: it was educational, with its analysis on digital divides, and the problems of online blogging influences & gaming addictions. It laid out the complexities of a difficult problem, and presented the challenge facing parents and educators, all in an easily-digestible format.

The 2nd half’s topic was “Achieve Your Breakthrough in Learning Difficulties” by Dr Doris A. The verdict on this talk is a bit more controversial; whether the talk was good or bad was a matter of opinion. I’m of the opinion that it was bad.

In all fairness, we should understand what is not part of this criticism. That the speaker had a genuine real-life experience, and is sincere in wanting to help others; this is something probably not subject to doubt. There was also no known intention to mislead.

However, as the talk progressed, something inside me cringed a little when I started to feel I was in the middle of an MLM talk. The traits were there: the promotion of a product that seemed too good to be true, oversimplification of a complex issue, over-repetition of few simple points.

A quick search on the web reveals that the Irlen method is indeed not without controversy (“Critics claim that the symptoms of those with Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome are related to already known visual disorders.”) The failure to at least acknowledge the existence of the controversy probably undermines the credibility of the talk.

Another thing that probably did not sit well with the audience was the over-emphasis on a single topic (the Irlen method). The broader issues associated with Dyslexia, and alternative methods of treatment seemed to have been ignored or brushed over.

Overall, I felt that both halves of the training session were at least informative. (I did not know about cherry credits or Irlen method before that day.) Even if there were parts where the pace was a little slow (I took 2 naps that afternoon.)

Basketball & Captain’s Ball Tournament (21June)

This saturday after training, there will be a Volunteers-only BBall/CBall tournament.

We are going to play BBall if we have a court. however, if there is no court available, we will play CBall in HQ.

The purpose of this "tournament" is to foster a better relationship between centres. "beat iron must be hot" (da tian yao cheng re) hee:) Since we are still fresh from camp, we should keep this going.

We have to let Tracy know if anyone from YY centre will not be able to make it.

More About June Camp 08 (14-15Jun)

Our Duties:

1) Night duty
There are 8 centres. Punggol SHG have the smallest no. of volunteers. Yishun have about 32 volunteers. Lights out is 10pm while rise & shine is 6.30am. 8.5hrs to be split. We did a draw lots and got the 1st shift for sentry duty: 11pm-12am :-)

2) Distribution of food duty
We will be helping to distribute the food during all meal times. Food will be distributed by centres. There will be just 4 meals (lunch, dinner & supper on 14th Jun and breakfast on 15th Jun).

3) Area cleaning duties
Ensuring areas like the toilets, dormitories and dinning hall are clean. The places where we use to play games should be cleaned up directly after using. Dinning hall should also be cleaned up after every meal. The children sleeping in the individual dormitories should clean up the respective dormitories that they sleep in. While toilets shall be shared by 2 dormitories, so those staying at the dormitories will clean up the toilets.

A Message from a New Blog Gardener

Hi everyone, this is a message from the new 'gardener' hired to maintain the blog (I'm the one who has decided to name himself C.Yang on this blog). I've gotten some easy tasks out of the way, such as updating info on upcoming events in the previous entries. The next 2 tasks have left me scratching my head a little.

First, we would like to pay tribute to efforts of the 2 VJC guys who has just left us: Eugene Y. and Nicolas P. You guys did a great job organizing the oral sessions and games sessions. Sadly, some of us did not get a chance to get to know you guys that well. (I'm of couse speaking as someone from this group) Therefore, I may not be the best person to write an appreciation piece for you guys. So can anyone out there send me the most / least flattering photos /descriptions /biographies / roasts of these 2 guys? I will put it together and post it once ready. If you guys do not hear about this again, then: Eugene and Nicholas, this is all to your tribute. :-P

Second, we have an objective of keeping the blog lively so that everyone expect to see something new on the blog every week. This can help us bond together and forge a Yuying SHG spirit. (These are Jimmy's wishes, which we probably all agree with) Some of us probably have some fantastic opinions on how to go about this. Therefore, please share your ideas.

One thing that perhaps we can start out with is to have everyone be able to write on this blog. If you like authorship permission, just mention that to me or Jimmy. Or if you have a rambling post (like this one I'm writing) which you feel contains 'bo liao' material, and emailiing everyone is spamming, then you can also send it to me to publish. I guess the only condition for any posts on this blog is that it must be linked to SHG activities (however loose the link).

C.Yang

Follow-up on group blogging
For group blogging, if you're logged in as the admin, you can add other authors by clicking the tabs in this order: Settings -> Permissions -> under 'Blog Authours', click on 'Add authors'.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I believe that in order for you to be added as another author, you need to have a Blogspot or a Google account (not necessarily under a google email address; in fact, my google account is under a yahoo email address)

If you would like your Blogger/Google account to be added as an author to this blog, just send an email telling us the email address you use.
